RIDGES AND HIPS

THE ROLE OF RIDGE AND HIP SYSTEMS

The ridge and hip lines are two of the most exposed areas on any pitched roof. They seal the junctions where roof slopes meet, providing protection from wind and rain while allowing the roof to breathe. Over time, mortar can crack or fail, leaving gaps that allow water to enter and tiles to loosen.

At Rogers Roofing, we install and maintain both traditional mortar systems and modern dry ridge and hip systems. Whether you need a small section repaired or a complete replacement, our goal is to leave every roof secure, ventilated and finished to a high standard.

MODERN DRY RIDGE AND HIP SYSTEMS

We exclusively install Hambleside Danelaw dry ridge and hip kits, chosen for their durability, ventilation performance and compliance with BS 5534 and BS 5250 standards. These systems are mechanically fixed, removing the need for mortar and ensuring a consistent, long-lasting seal even in high winds and severe weather.

Hambleside Danelaw’s CON6+ Dry Fix Ridge and Hip System provides a secure mechanical fixing with built-in ventilation to prevent condensation. Its flexible ridge roll forms a continuous weatherproof seal along the ridge or hip, while the mechanical clips keep each tile firmly in place. The system is compatible with a wide range of roof coverings and designed to cope with the movement and temperature changes that often cause traditional mortar systems to fail.

The materials used are lightweight yet durable, resistant to UV degradation and designed to provide years of maintenance-free performance. The result is a clean, neat roofline that meets all current building and ventilation requirements.

DRY RIDGE AND HIP INSTALLATION PROCESS

Each installation begins with the careful removal of the existing ridge or hip tiles and any old mortar. The ridge line is then cleaned and prepared, checking that all tiles and fixings are secure and correctly aligned. Once cleaned and prepared, battens are installed where the two roof slopes meet, providing a solid fixing point for the new system.

A new Hambleside Danelaw ridge roll is then fitted along the ridge or hip to provide continuous ventilation and weather protection. The ridge and hip tiles are mechanically fixed in place using the manufacturer’s approved system, ensuring a consistent, wind-resistant finish.

The completed ridge and hip lines provide strong mechanical fixing, effective ventilation and long-term protection against water ingress, all without the need for ongoing maintenance.

TRADITIONAL MORTAR RIDGE REPLACEMENTS

For properties where maintaining the original appearance is important or requested, we can carry out full mortar ridge replacements to restore a traditional finish, or partial repairs where only a small section has become worn or damaged.

This process involves removing the old mortar, preparing the tiles, and re-bedding the ridge tiles on a fresh mix before repointing for a uniform, weatherproof result.

Mortar ridges and hips are also essential where new sections need to match existing areas, ensuring a consistent appearance and finish across the roof. When completed to a high standard, they can continue to perform well for many years.

WHY RIDGE AND HIP WORK MATTERS

A properly installed ridge and hip system is essential for keeping the roof watertight and ventilated. Whether you have a dry ridge system or a traditional mortar ridge, our team can provide the right solution, advice and workmanship to ensure lasting protection.

Failing mortar or poor installation can lead to leaks or loose ridge tiles becoming a risk in high winds. By using high-quality materials such as Hambleside Danelaw dry fix kits or Remix Roof Tile Bedding Mortar, we make sure your roof stays secure, weatherproof and built to last.
